Stylist Spotlight: Jade Federico, Colour Jade Studio

The reason Virtue® formulas are efficacious, hardworking, and successful at transforming hair into its healthiest version is all because of our hair-healing technology––and no one understands that better than our Virtue® educators. As beacons of knowledge for the brand, they are curious, enthusiastic, and passionate about hair, health, and everything Virtue® stands for. Here, meet the hair wizards who are helping others understand the science behind our strand-saving formulas one client at a time.

Doing hair always came naturally to colorist and Virtue® educator Jade Federico of Colour Jade Studio in Boston, MA. “I was always changing my hair and trying new things, but I never realized it was something I could do as a career until a few years out of high school,” she says. Her sister-in-law is a hairstylist, which inspired her to go to school, and the rest his history. Here she discusses setting boundaries and her work-life balance, her favorite cocktail of Virtue® products, and her signature coloring style.

Q: What insights do you have for the pro community regarding re-openings/navigating the new normal?
Continue to do what is best for you. Everyone will have a different opinion on what is right and wrong. Make sure you’re following all the precautions you should be, but also setting boundaries for yourself.

Q: What’s your favorite memory from your journey? When did it feel like you caught your “big break?”
When I opened my own studio. It was a big dream and it still feels surreal!

Q: Is there anyone in the industry or beyond that you really admire, or someone who inspired you in your career?
My biggest inspiration is Ashlee Allen. I love how versatile she is in everything she does.

Q: How do you define a “success” after a client leaves your salon?
A success is when a client leaves feeling better than when they walked in.

Q: What’s your favorite way to unwind after work?
Honestly, just sitting and watching a movie with a glass of wine.

Q: If you could spend the day with someone who you consider a “style icon” who would it be? What would you do?
Tattoo artist Megan Massacre. I’d have her take me to her favorite stores and restaurants!

Q: How do you like to stay up to date on the latest trends, techniques, and styles?
One of my biggest motivators for staying up to date is Instagram. I’m constantly watching videos and hair tutorials. It’s fun to see all the new trends in hair, and I really believe a lot of that comes from influencers.

Q: What’s a trend that you hope comes back? Never goes out of style?
The “lived-in” style. It’s so great; I truly love being able to incorporate people’s natural color and beauty into their hairstyle.

Q: What do you value most about being a Virtue® affiliate?
The quality behind the brand, it’s so amazing and really unlike anything else I have ever tried.

Q: What was the worst haircut you ever had?
In 7th grade, I had long hair and decided I wanted to chop it all off and do the super-sceney, teased-out, layered haircut. That’s not at all what I got. I left with a short bob, unstyled and just blow dried with no product or brush. So of course it didn’t look anything like a styled, spiky, product-filled hairstyle!

Q: What was the first hairstyle or technique that you mastered? The hardest?
The first would be balayage. However, I feel like it changes often, and there are so many different ways to paint, which is also why it’s my specialty and I continue to try new things.

Q: What’s your personal hair routine? Your favorite part of your hair routine?
That I can just wake up and go!

Q: What other things are you passionate about that aren’t hair related?
Hair is all-consuming to me, but otherwise I would say my relationships with friends and loved ones.

Q: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure to indulge?
Sitting at the TV all day––and I mean from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep.

Q: How do you manage work-life balance?
Set boundaries for myself. I have a time frame of when I answer clients and questions on Instagram or on my phone.

Q: What’s next for your career?
I would absolutely love to jump in to educating and teaching classes.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Make sure to always stand up for yourself. Don’t let other people decide how you should feel or what you should do!

Q: What’s your favorite Virtue® product?
My favorite cocktail of products is the Un-Frizz Cream mixed with Healing Oil. Or ColorKick™!
