I start looking at inspiration images that can derive from architecture, cultural ceremonial imagery, fashion runways – pretty much anywhere. Then I look at the dress – if it’s shiny maybe I’ll think about adding a little more shine in the hair, or if the dress has a lot of textural elements, maybe I’ll think about bringing in more texture. If it has a high neck, maybe I’ll throw the hair up; if it’s a little more bohemian in vibe, maybe I’ll keep it down and wavy with lots of movement.
Then I think about what the actual event is. For some events like movie premiers, you can have a bit more freedom. If it’s for the Oscars, it needs to have some polish to it. I’ll talk to the makeup artist and the fashion stylist and the woman herself to devise a total look that’s collaborative and cohesive and also comfortable to wear.
Finally, I always try to do something that’s visually interesting to make the woman stand out and feel beautiful.
ADIR’S RULES FOR RED CARPET HAIR:
A GREAT TIP: If you’re using hair pins, lay them out on a paper towel and spray them with hair spray to add a little more grip, so they’ll stay in place all night.
